Taking Care of Business

They didn’t cut out the middle man.  Men dressed in black and white uniforms are still running around the field.  They carry as much of a look of confusion to them as those watching from the sidelines.  The calls are comical until a several bad ones determine a different outcome than what may have been, if the actual rules were enforced.  A call for pass interference on the wrong team, or personal fouls that have been missed completely or called on the wrong players are the new highlights in football.  Some blame for this mess should be shared with those who created it.

Union’s been on strike, making it tough on Roger Goodell.  The NFL commissioner is as much to blame as anyone for the bad calls made on the field.  He made the call to bring in the replacements.  Last season was impressive, the way the player lockout was resolved before the season began.  They chose a different approach for their officiators, who take a tiny percentage of the income that lines the owners’ and commissioners’ pockets.

Those upper class fools don’t see the disgust of the fans who are watching from their living rooms, or at restaurants and bars.  It’s more insulting to the fans that spend their dollars for the entertainment on a Sunday or Monday game, when the integrity of the game is on the line.  From their sky box, these wealthy men still see plenty of green.  Depending on how long the fiasco continues, they may be able to fund the difference in pay and pensions from penalties paid by outraged coaches.

The owners will have no reason to fire any coach for their performance this year.  When the owner’s ask what happened, “It was the untrained man with the whistle.”  These men are the deciders and they decide what’s best, just taking care of business.  That’s all.

They passed their physicals to take to the field, but an eye test wasn’t required.  When an instant replay doesn’t help the decider to see clearly what everyone else is seeing, they may need a time out.  When talent on a play is ruled as a penalty – does Time Life still make instruction books?  When one coach challenges a play and the other coach challenges the idea that the first coach challenged a play that was unchallengeable, could it be these men don’t really belong in the game?

If anything, the referees that fans have cussed for years have earned some respect with this strike.  Even the one you hate seeing on the same field as your team, you look forward to his return.  If not by week four as many would like, then it must happen by week five at the latest.  Otherwise it’s the fans who are the jackasses for continuing to support something that hasn’t been much worth watching up to this point in the season.

My banter was on current affairs and ran from 2011 - 2016. I currently enjoy writing satire and horror shorts.

I chose themes to run against each current event to bring some entertainment to my Banters. I began writing the banter in February 2011, and wrote my last in February 2016.
