Oil Cracking Snafu

9/25/2013

Relief at the pump may start with a greater supply of crude oil.  Playing its part as a refinery, the United States has the heat on, as it is one of the most important factors when cracking gasoline.  Under the Obama administration an oppressive heat has been applied to Iran through sanctions.  The US is moving towards greener energy, while imposing sanctions on Iran’s oil exports.  Neither of which have helped the price of gasoline for the US consumer. The tough sanctions imposed on Iran appear to have brought their new leader to pursue talks.

These sanctions, which are designed to work like a catalyst, appear to be working. Their economy has tanked.  Iran attempted to increase exports in iron to compensate for the loss of oil revenue. (Antonioli, 2013)  However, sanctions have been added to non-oil exports as well.  Pressure applied by the US via sanctions has led Iran’s revenue to plunge by more than fifty percent.  With the sanctions applied to their financial sector, Iran must barter or accept the other countries currency, as there is no option for them to trade in dollars.

After being run with a catalyst, it’s onto the reactor.  The reaction of Iran’s new President, Hassan Rouhani, is displayed through his interest in relations with the west.  In his speech to the U.N., on September 24, he denounced the sanctions on Iran as, “violent, pure and simple.”  He wishes to come to an agreement on Iran’s pursuit of nuclear energy, advising that they do not wish to establish nuclear weapons. (Gladstone, 2013)

There was much anticipation from the American media that there could be a possible handshake between President Obama and President Rouhani.  Prior to their attendance at the U.N. General assembly, talk flooded the internet of how symbolic such a handshake would be.  The handshake was a no-go, due to some complexities on the Iranian side, according to one U.S. official. (Torbati, 2013)  Disappointment was one reaction.  However, the door has been opened, and more peaceful relations may be a possibility in the future.

It’s an air of diplomacy that will deliver fuel to the regenerator.  If negotiations prove to be more substance than hot air, a loosening of sanctions may be in Iran’s future.  They must be tested and proven legitimate before that step ever takes place.  Easing sanctions without first proving Iran’s true intentions would be detrimental to Israel.

Smooth control and no explosions is the outcome sought by the United States in limiting Iran’s options to pursue nuclear weapons.  If negotiations proceed and go well, the output will be a high-performance gasoline that doesn’t knock.  “Power is wasted when gasoline knocks.” (The Story of Gasoline)  Molecules that offer a violent combustion, are not working as team to stay under control.  Numerous tests may be necessary to ensure that power remains smooth, with a forward progress.  Through the cracking method, we obtain more gasoline and in the end maybe a break at the pump.

End of an Era

“The first, original, genuine, no money back guarantee….” – Muppets – The Muppet Show Theme (Henson/Pottle)

Saying goodbye can be such a hard thing to say.  Lincoln center said goodbye to the NYC Opera in 2011, after the newly renovated theater proved to be more than the opera could afford.  It’s been two years since they left their home, with hopes that the show would go on.  They’ve had a rough time coming up with the funding to continue their art.  They must raise $7 million by the end of September to continue with this year’s shows, and an additional $13 million by the end December to avoid cancelling next year’s shows. (COOPER, 13) They have an account on Kickstarter that they're looking to bring in $1 million from.  In this day and age, starving artists don’t have to beg on the streets.

While we’re saying goodbye, AM radio appears to be another one on their way out.  After losing much of its audience a couple decades back to FM radio, the frequency turned away from music channels, and focused on news and sports.  With the popularity of satellite and Pandora, FM could become the new AM for baseball, as a third of the teams have turned to broadcasting on the other side of the dial.  The radio frequency is no longer competing only with other radio signals; they’re now losing to interference from cell service and consumer electronics. (Wyatt, 2013)  With much more to say, only a fool would try, so perhaps it’s time to say goodbye to Rush Limbaugh who broadcasts on 80% of the conservative AM talk radio stations.

Feel their wings and wonder why, another airline may soon say goodbye.  American Airlines and US Airways have been in talks of a merger.  The justice department is fighting the merger with worries of less competition leading to higher fares.  American has been bankrupt since 2011; in order to continue operations they argue it’s a must.  A better argument would be, “But how come they got to merge?” in reference to the United/Continental merger that took place in recent years.  (Agrawal, 2013)

Remember the good times.  There was a time when you didn’t feel like a sardine in a can, back when American added extra inches of leg room in coach.  When the strategy didn’t pay out, the seats were pushed back together.  Casey Kasem’s top 40, aired on AM before the move to FM.  You never know when, but somehow they always show up again.  More than once, I’ve returned to my youth with Sirius radio.  Years ago, you fought to obtain a signal for a game.  Those signals have not grown clearer, but the memories live on.  Remember when the NYC opera was housed in Lincoln Center.  Sometimes goodbye shouldn’t be forever.

It’s hard to know what the future will bring for each of these long standing institutions.  Each one may soon be a part of the past.  If the past has taught us anything, it’s the lesson that bankruptcy leads to the no money back guarantee.

My banter was on current affairs and ran from 2011 - 2016. I currently enjoy writing satire and horror shorts.

I chose themes to run against each current event to bring some entertainment to my Banters. I began writing the banter in February 2011, and wrote my last in February 2016.
