Reconstruction

10/22/2014

Tough Western sanctions on Russia widened the Kremlin’s relationship with China.  Vladimir Putin is on the road to reconstruction, strengthening ties with China by the signing of 40 new deals last week.  As the ruble and oil prices tumble, new trade contracts are secured for oil and gas to help Russia keep it’s pace.  His prayers for help were answered, now he must pray it lasts.

Many pundits suggest that there is now an ice-cold war, due to Russia deploying military to the Artic.  Russia found a new ice cube to put a flag on.  This new found island of approximately 500 square meters sits about 1 meter above water.  Russia plans to have military bases all along the Artic border by the end of 2014.  This ice-cold war is equivalent to saying the road behind was rocky, as we approach the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall.

Maybe Vladimir Putin was feeling cocky when he annexed Crimea earlier this year.  His attitude hasn’t appeared to change much since, as Russia invades territories underwater and in the air.  Sweden has been concerned that a Russian Submarine threatened their waters.  Russia replied, “Wasn’t us.”  They then suggested Sweden point fingers at their Dutch neighbors instead; they’re the ones speaking Russian in the deep seas.  Unhappy with what’s become of the Soviet Union, the Russian President looks to rebuild what has fallen.

Russia has yet to acknowledge they have lost power.  Instead they say it’s the West who refuses to acknowledge how powerful they are.  As a response to actions necessary to ease sanctions, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov declared there will be no acceptance of conditions.  The foreign minister says they’re already doing more than anyone to bring an end to the conflict, and help reorganize the Ukraine. (Volodymyr Verbyany, 2014)  They view the United States as a relationship that’s in their past, and both sides continue to severe ties.

The Kremlin must think fast when faced with hard times.  McDonalds became a target in August of this year, and locations throughout Russia have continued to close since.  A Russian watchdog claims it’s due to “safety and quality” reasons.  When sanctions bit Russia, the Kremlin super-sized his attack on the golden arches.  He got his teeth back.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

10/1/2014

Eric Holder has had several firsts in his career.  For one, he is the first cabinet member to be held in contempt of congress.  When the charges surrounding a scandal are serious enough, one must ask, “who do I know?”  President Obama issued executive privilege on the documents being withheld the same day Holder was held in contempt.

Attorney General Eric Holder’s resignation comes coincidently at a time when the DOJ has been ruled by two federal judges to release documents pertaining to the “fast and furious” scandal.  The Attorney General declared during his tenure that no individual or corporation is “Too big to Jail.”  At the same time, he request his own mistakes and those made by his department be swept under the rug.  His resignation for “personal reasons” has caused some speculation as to the timing of it.

This Attorney General will be remembered for his issues on race.  The people’s attorney has made several requests that the “fast and furious” documents to be delayed until Nov. 3, 2014, the day prior to the mid-term elections.  Having them set at the end of the mid-term race doesn’t allow much time for review, or for them to have an effect on the outcome of the elections.  The documents surrounding the scandal were originally required to be turned over on Oct. 1, 2014 by Judge Amy Berman Jackson and have been granted a delay until Oct. 22, 2014, but no longer.

Like any government scandal, when the truth is near the time comes for a high official to resign.  Director of the Secret Service, Julia Pierson, has also offered her resignation in the wake of several security breaches.  Her resignation came today after recent criticism from Republicans and Democrats alike that they fear for their own safety with the lapses in white house security.

The AG is part of scandal that placed guns in the hands of the Mexican drug cartel and led to numerous deaths.  The Director is part of scandal that couldn’t keep men with weapons away from the White House.  The only thing missing here is a bet between them of who could jeopardize the security of the US the most.

My banter was on current affairs and ran from 2011 - 2016. I currently enjoy writing satire and horror shorts.

I chose themes to run against each current event to bring some entertainment to my Banters. I began writing the banter in February 2011, and wrote my last in February 2016.
