A Cash Cow

Is it really a loss?  Goldman Sachs reported a $393 million dollar loss for the third quarter of 2011.  During the third quarter Goldman Sachs bought back $2.2 billion of their own stock.  From their cash overflow they were able to  invest in their own stock what appears to be a significant amount compared to the pennies per share lost this third quarter.

If corporations are people, they're not stupid people.  While the economic times we live in are difficult, they have found a convenient way to spend their cash without it ever leaving their pockets.  It doesn't seem that it should be as alarming as the media has made it that Goldman Sachs has reported a loss.

A current trend for large corporations is buying back their shares.  In doing so, they reduce the shares outstanding bringing increased value to those that remain in the market.  They've also opened up the option to sell the stock back into the market at a higher price in the future. The scenario is a win, win.

For the average citizen who obtains money through illicit means and then converts that cash into stock, they may be looked at for money laundering.  Many look at the large financial institutions as the culprits for the current mess.  They see lenders with shady practices who appear to still be the ones who are profiting in the end.  What else are they going to do with all that extra cash they've been holding onto?

In these uncertain times, hiring does not appear to be seen as an option.  They have promised to dispose of a 1000 jobs by mid 2012 in order to cut their losses.  It's interesting that a company can spend so much money buying back stock, then look to bonds to finance their future.  The newest announcement is a debt sale of 50-year bonds totaling 500 million, more than enough to cover them third quarter losses.

"The American people I talk to don't spend every moment thinking, 'How can I tax my neighbor more than they're being taxed?' They say, 'How can I get a good job? How can my kids get good jobs? How can seniors have a confidence in their future when they know that Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are bankrupt?'" These are all good questions that these folks will continue to ponder if they consider a candidate who is unwilling to tax the wealthy at an equivalent rate to the middle class.  This delegate proposes to extend the retirement age to cut spending.  Americans are healthier these days than they were during the introduction of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.  If folks work longer to pay into these programs, while waiting until a later stage to access the allowance, this will be an answer to cutting government spending.

"I am in favor of stem-cell research. I am not in favor of creating new human embryos through cloning."  His position has evolved over time, but still provides a clear message that he is not pro-life.  Political pundit, Phyllis Schlafly, communicated that his stance should not be confused with one that was pro-life.  In his defense, he has only supported research on the extra embryos that couples would not be using to create babies.

"We conservatives don't have a corner on saying 'no'. We're just the ones who say it when it's the right thing to say." However, when constantly taking an opposite stance from the liberals, conservatives can be considered to have their own angle.

"I feel very deeply about the need to respect and tolerate people of different social - or sexual orientation. But at the same time, I believe marriage should be preserved as an institution for one man and one woman."  His respect for folks of different sexual orientation is clearly demonstrated by his favorable position of gays in the military.  These patriots are welcome to fight for the freedom of our nation, as long as were clear that freedom does not included same-sex marriage.

"I saw my father march with Martin Luther King."  He was inspired to make this claim during his 2008 presidential run.  This was a figure of speech which was later determined to mean that his father supported a cause that he did not actually take part in.  Mitt Romney, a GOP hopeful, has a dream of his own.  This is not to be confused with the DREAM Act.

My banter was on current affairs and ran from 2011 - 2016. I currently enjoy writing satire and horror shorts.

I chose themes to run against each current event to bring some entertainment to my Banters. I began writing the banter in February 2011, and wrote my last in February 2016.
