The Juice Man

With the recent news of the AT&T acquisition of DirecTV, there is some question as to what is driving the deal.  One of the drivers is said to be fear.  As Comcast is in the process of purchasing Time Warner Cable, DirecTV may have been worried they couldn’t succeed in the pay TV industry any longer without partnering up with another giant.  If both the Time Warner and DirecTV mergers take place, what kind of pressure does that place on Dish?

A small time company like Dish may have a hard time negotiating deals with networks to stay competitive with the giants of the industry.  They would either be forced to merge with a major player, or be forced out.  Allowing a couple of major league players to monopolize the playing field could hurt us all in the long run.

The NFL ticket is one of the biggest components going into the mix.  If a contract isn’t renewed between DirecTV and the NFL, then AT&T has the option to back out without paying a penalty fee.  At this time, DirecTV’s Sunday Ticket can be purchased to watch over the Internet.  If DirecTV can negotiate another contract with the NFL prior to the merger, then AT&T may be able to monopolize the option of people watching the NFL via their handheld devices.

AT&T can enjoy some added boosters.  Subscriber acquisitions, efficiencies, and product bundling will all boost their profits.  These boosters help shed weight and promise to increase the overall health of the companies.  In the end, they expect to have a great synergy concoction.

They may be a successful together and increase profits, but at what cost?  The main ingredients in this synergism are a combination of diluted stock, and squeezed consumers.  It doesn’t sound very appetizing.  However, a great juice man knows that it’s more about health than taste.

Consumers have a different view of the two giants creating a synergism.  We see the creation of Godzilla, who can bring an extreme change to the communication and media landscapes.  He can disrupt the wires and burn down the competition.  “Oh no, they say he’s got to go.  Go, Go, Godzilla!” (Blue Oyster Cult)

Panama’s vice president Juan Carlos Varela pulled off the presidential victory in a tight race.  He’s a man who shares responsibility for the economic growth but not the non-transparency that took place during the time he spent in office under President Ricardo Martinelli.  He intends to take the negative from the time of his vice presidency and turn it into a positive outcome during his presidency.  President Varela vowed to tax corruption, meaning the previous president will pay his dues.

The falling out between the two took place during a time when Martinelli was attempting to change the constitution, that he may be allowed to run for a third consecutive term.  When Varela didn’t concur, Martinelli dismissed Varela from his additional position of prime minister.

President Martinelli may have thought he found away around leaving office.  His wife, Marta Linares, became the running mate of leading candidate Jose Domingo Arias.  Linares had not previously held an elected political seat, and her husband was much more active than herself in the campaigning.  With fears of inflation and further corruption, public support didn’t lie behind Arias on the May 4, Election Day.

Supermarket mogul and previous president Martinelli can expect to be affected by the political change, as Varela has said he will price fix basic grocery staples.  Under Martinelli, a gross amount of profit was being made on the most basic foods.  Through price control, Varela expects to lower the cost of living by more than 600 million for the people of Panama.

The newly elected president wants to narrow the gap between the rich and the poor.  Taking the approach of the south pacific moon goddess, if done right, Varela should be able to take any negative and make the results positive times three.  Varela’s family owns the largest liquor company in Panama; may his trickle down effect fill the Panamanians glasses with nothing but cheer!

My banter was on current affairs and ran from 2011 - 2016. I currently enjoy writing satire and horror shorts.

I chose themes to run against each current event to bring some entertainment to my Banters. I began writing the banter in February 2011, and wrote my last in February 2016.
