One liberal argument against allowing an opt-out for a corporation’s freedom of religion is the idea that it will lead to other forms of discrimination. They imply allowing the discrimination against the woman’s right to choose will allow discrimination against gender or sexual orientation. Prior to the enforcement of ObamaCare, health insurance companies could see that girls were girls and men were men.
Maybe we can get another Herbert Hoover. The scapegoat for the great depression employed a health program for children and is still in effect today. Why is it the promise of prosperity for all ends with an economic crash? While the times have changed the effect of government, whether conservative or liberal has returned us to similar issues of those days.
The conservative view is against the “welfare state.” They may now feel that they’ve been dealt the winning hand with the news of Supreme Court siding with Hobby Lobby on a win against social healthcare. As a for-profit corporation with “Christian” values, being forced to provide healthcare with a contraceptive option of the morning after pill violated their freedoms. The lesson here may be that employees need to hold the same religious values as the corporation they choose to work for in order to avoid a violation of their own freedoms.
Hobby Lobby isn’t against birth control that is proactively used to avoid pregnancy. They are against ending a pregnancy that may not have fully begun after fertilization. This turns into the argument of when does life begin. Remember when abortion wasn’t considered birth control, but instead just considered abortion. Those were the days.
